RENOVATING YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS:

TOP 10 ELECTRICAL ITEMS

When renovating your home or business it is expected that there will be things that pop us as the project progresses.  There are a few electrical items to address throughout the project that may actually save you money and time over the long haul.  

1. ALUMINUM WIRING

Homes built in the early 1950’s up to the late 1970’s may be wired with aluminum wiring.  This is a concern for many reasons (see ALUMINUM WIRING CONCERNS IN OLDER HOMES ) and should be addressed and upgraded during your renovation for safety, efficiency and to handle the capacity of today’s appliances and gadgetry that put more demand on your electrical system. 

2. ADDITION OR RELOCATION OF COMPUTER DATA LINES

As technology increasingly becomes more ingrained in our everyday way of life for both personal and business, another issue to correct may be the addition or relocating of computer data lines to accommodate current and future needs.

3. NOT ENOUGH OUTLETS

As your business or family expands, so does our need for electrical power.  With constant technological development comes more computers, printers, appliances, phone chargers, televisions, video games and gadgets. When renovating your home or business, make sure that you have enough outlets to handle the demand both indoor and outdoors so to safely reduce the requirement of using power strips or extension cords.

4. INSTALL GFCI'S 

Another area to focus on is updating your current outlets to GFCI's which are now standard in bathrooms and kitchens.  GFCI's will shut off the electricity of the outlet, thus turning off the plugged-in item if it comes in contact with water or moisture.  If you own an older property it is highly likely that these are non-existent and is also a good idea to upgrade these outlets to ensure the safety of your family and employees. 

5. WORN OUT RECEPTACLES

When you plug an item in and a few minutes later the plug is laying on the floor,  this usually means that you need to upgrade your outlets. Outlets should grip the end of the plug when it’s plugged into the holes. When the clip that’s intended to hold the plug wears out, it allows the plug to slip out and fall to the floor. Regrettably, this situation can cause arcs, sparking, and it’s a fire hazard. Have your electrician change these outlets as soon as possible.

6. ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING

It is a good idea to speak to a qualified electrical company prior to any major construction to discuss your options and organise your efforts in such a way that you understand the energy efficient lighting solutions available before you are tackle your renovation.  This will be easier one your bank account over time with a reduced electricity bill and save yourself the hassle down the road.

7. ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS

There are many consumers who have already made the EV plunge and love their little electric vehicle!  If you are looking to flip a home or sell in the near future, it is good idea to consider installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS)  for the future home owner.  As a business owner, one should also consider the requirement to have EVCS for your staff. 

8. MAIN ELECTRIC PANEL AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS 

The main electric panel and a circuit breakers in your home or business should also be assessed to ensure they are able to carry the demand put on your electrical system and have room to spare for your future electrical needs.  If you are planning to install new applicances such as convectional microwaves, ovens and refridgerators, keep in mind that today's modern appliances can may require more power.  This may result in an increase the load on your circuit breakers and potentially cause other electrical issues.
